More than 1,300 days since they were last in the same room, Joe Biden and Donald Trump will converge tonight for the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. If tonight’s debate in Atlanta seems a little different, that’s because it will be: The studio won’t have a live audience, for instance, and the candidates’ mics will be muted when it’s not their turn to speak. In another rarity, there will be two commercial breaks, during which Trump and Biden won’t be allowed to consult with advisers.

It's the earliest-ever in a presidential race, taking place before the Republican and Democratic conventions in July and August -- when both Trump and Biden will officially accept their party's nominations.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- At least one person was killed and several others were injured after a powerful storm system moved through the Tri-State area. In East Orange, New Jersey, a 30-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on him in his backyard around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Juan Jose Angeles Lopez was trying to secure the backyard before the worst of the storm approached when the massive tree cracked, leaving him buried. His family said he was the father of a 2-year-old and his wife is seven months pregnant. She spent the night hospitalized and was monitored after she was overwhelmed by grief.

President Biden and former President Donald Trump will participate in the first presidential debate of the 2024 election on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. The debate, hosted by CNN, will be the first time either candidate has been on a debate stage since 2020. The debate will also be simulcast on other networks, including CBS and CBS News 24/7 streaming. Trump will get the final word of the night, while Mr. Biden got to choose whether he wanted the podium on the right or left side. Their microphones will be muted except when it's their turn to speak. Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) introduced a new House Bill on Thursday that would withhold federal highway funds from states that allow protesters to block major thoroughfares. The bill, known as the Clear the ROADS (Reckless Obstructions and Dangers on Streets) Act, comes in response to a growing number of traffic-disrupting demonstrations that have seen mobs of protesters take to the streets in support of various causes. Under the Clear the ROADS Act, the federal government will be authorized to withhold 10 percent of a state’s highway funding if it has not made reasonable efforts to stop activists from blockading roadways covered under the funding system.

Former President Donald Trump on Thursday posted on social media climate talking points that his former Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Andrew Wheeler, appears to have sent Trump to prepare for his upcoming debate with President Joe Biden. Trump has long denied the reality of the climate crisis and has repeatedly made false claims as he sought to minimizes its threat and roll back environmental regulations. The talking points from Wheeler criticize Biden for rejoining the Paris climate accord, the landmark global climate agreement to try to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius. Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Agreement while in office. The talking points also criticize Biden for “canceling pipelines” after his administration revoked the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, and argued the US was “more energy dominant” under the Trump administration.

If the presidential election were held today, Biden would receive 45% of the votes and Trump 43%. Noteworthy is that Biden’s ballot support has held steady in spite of his still-lagging approval ratings. Just over one-third (34%) of Americans approve of his job as President. Despite the closeness of results, 39% of Americans believe that Donald Trump will win the next election, while 32% think that Joe Biden will win.

According to the results of a new Syracuse University/Ipsos American Identity poll published on Thursday, 61% of Americans overall plan on tuning in for the televised debate. Broken down by party affiliation, Republican supporters of Donald Trump are significantly more likely to watch the event than their Democrat counterparts. 75% of Republicans are at least “somewhat likely” to watch the debate live, compared to 60% of Democrats and 58% of Independents.
